It takes a lot of confidence to open a restaurant, even more so to hold its Grand Opening on Friday the 13th. Hats off to Luis and Ramon Garcia for doing just that.
The brothers recently opened Siete Luminarias at 2818 Cherokee (former site of La Vallesana 2). We know we don't have to vouch for the authenticity of any restaurant with a Cherokee St. address, but even then, there are a few surprises: Joining the standard litany of burritos, enchiladas, gorditas, tortas, tamales, and eight kinds of street tacos, are tlacoyos (a fried, stuffed masa cake, resembling a small football) and pambazo (Mexican bread dipped in guajillo pepper sauce, then stuffed and eaten as a sandwich). Prices are all under $10; street tacos are $1.50 per.
On weekends, the rotating selection of soups includes green pozole, red pozole, menudo, and mexican meatball. Also noteworthy is that the Garcias make their tortillas--both flour and corn--fresh in-house daily.
Siete has a Facebook page and the brothers took it upon themselves to open a page on both UrbanSpoon and Yelp. Like I said, a little confidence never hurts.

(And a few of the signs are as spicy as the fare. We won't go there, but Luis speaks perfect English....ask him to translate.)
