Sauce on the Side, the two-year-old Downtown eatery that has made calzones into a cottage industry, has just announced plans to open a second location in Clayton.
A former Einstein Bros Bagels at 7810 Forsyth Blvd. (below) will blossom into the Italian restaurant by June 1, said S.O.S co-owner Brendon Maciariello. The trio of fellers that owns the calzone co. -- Maciariello, Ryan Mangialardo and Daniel Porzel -- are excited to claim their share of the bustling Clayton lunch crowds and to tap into the Washington University late-night crowds as well, Maciariello said.
The restaurant's menu will stay the same in its Clayton incarnation. Fans of the "Gonzo" (salami, dates, baby spinach, Boursin, mozzarella, mascarpone, and ricotta) and the "Meat Me in St. Louie" (pepperoni, Italian sausage, Provel, mascarpone, and ricotta) calzone pockets will still be able to get their fix in the new spot. The fun monthly specials, like this month's "Kung Pao Zone" (starring the fiery hot "wasabi arugula" ) and the “Hot Mother Clucker” buffalo-chicken bomb, will surely make their appearances at the Clayton location sooner or later, too.
Come early July, we'd bet on a reappearance of the popular, cheeseburger-inspired "'Murica" (below), with mozzarella, smoked cheddar, onions, hamburger, bacon, and housemade pickles, topped off with an egg and served with a BBQ aioli.
