Food trucks are known for being budget-friendly, but wheeled eateries in St. Louis take it to the next level. Many of the city’s trucks offer fresh, diverse fare on a dime, some of which is better than what you’d find in a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Whether you’re looking to satisfy your Korean craving with bibimbap or venture into Balkan food territory with a gyro, the trucks have you covered. Here are some of the best places to get out-of-the box food truck fare for less than $10.
1. Chicken gyro at Balkan Treat Box
When you see Balkan Treat Box’s bright turquoise truck pull up to the curb, run, don’t walk, to get a chicken gyro (pictured above). Fresh, juicy pieces of marinated chicken are stuffed between homemade somun or pita bread. The sandwich includes lettuce, tomato, and a spicy sauce that I want to marry. The chicken gyro runs for $10 before tip.
2. Spicy tofu with kimchi at Kbop
Hungry lunch-goers flock to Kbop’s signature yellow truck for Korean fare. Even though most options cost less than $10, the spicy tofu is my budget-friendly pick. Spring for kimchi to put on top. It costs a dollar more, but it adds some tanginess to the dish. Spicy tofu with kimchi comes to $8 before tip.
3. Flying Pig at Guerrilla Street Food
Most options at the Guerrilla Street Food truck ring in for less than $10, but my favorite is the Flying Pig. The bowl includes soft, 12-hour roasted pork shoulder that melts in your mouth, spicy Sriracha sauce, and a poached egg served over steamed jasmine rice. It rings in for $8 before tip.
4. Taco trio at Cha Cha Chow
Food truck tacos don’t get much better than the ones at Cha Cha Chow. Diners can choose two or three different tacos served with a side. I’d recommend the pork, which comes with a splash of golden BBQ sauce, the fish, and the curried sweet potato. Diners can order two tacos with a side for $9 before tip, or splurge on three tacos and a side for $10 before tip.
5. Samosa chole at Bombay Food Junkies
Bombay Food Junkies serves some of the best Indian street food in St. Louis. One of my favorite dishes, the samosa chole, includes two crispy samosas topped with chickpea curry, marinated onions, and sweet and sour chutneys. It’s the perfect thing to order when you can’t decide between samosas or a hearty, bean-based stew. The samosa chole comes to $8.50 before tip.
