Editor’s note: This article has been updated to reflect Ted Wight as the property’s agent and include new images of the home.
One of the only two houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in St. Louis is for sale. The property, known as the “The Pappas House,” was first listed after the original and only owner Bette Pappas passed away in February at the age of 91 last year. Bette and her late husband Theodore Pappas commissioned Wright to design the house in 1955. Construction began in 1960 and was completed in 1964. We first shared this home when it was by the couple’s three daughters, now Ted Wight of Dielmann Sotheby’s International Realty.

The property was added to the National Registrar of Historic Places in 1979 and is the second largest Usonian Automatic, a style created by Wright to keep costs low. Wright’s Usonian Automatic homes didn’t include a basement or an attic and were built using inexpensive modular concrete blocks.
“The Pappas House” has four bedrooms and is located in Town and Country on more than 3 acres of wooded land. The living room features a Cherokee red concrete floor and Philippine mahogany furniture designed by Wright. Floor-to-ceiling glass double doors can be found on the terrace adjacent to the living room with glass insets mixed in with the concrete blocks. More than 500 glass insets are located throughout the estate. The living room and dining room are the heart of the home and highlight a dining room table and chairs designed by Wright.
The home features three roof levels. The highest roof level can be found in the kitchen at 12.5 feet, allowing natural light to flow into the space through clerestory windows.
