The first step in any design project is to find inspiration, and this app gives you plenty of it. Extolled as the “Wikipedia of interior and exterior design” by CNN, Houzz has more than 200,000 high resolution photos of beautiful spaces.

2. iHandy Carpenter ($1.99, Available on iPhone and Android)

Not all of us cary around a bevy of tools to help us with the impromptu design project, but this app will get you close to it. The iHandy Carpenter app will turn your phone into a five common home improvement tools: a bubble level bar, surface level, ruler, protractor, and plumb bob.  

3. Mark on Call ($1.99, Available for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch)

Whether you’re redesigning a room, or rearranging it, lay it out first with this very helpful app that allows you to input the exact measurements for your room, dimensions for your furniture, accessories, and more to see where everything will fit best.  

4. Handy Man DIY ($1.99, Available for the iPhone and iPod Touch)

Taking the do-it-yourself approach? This app will help you figure out how many tiles you’ll need based on the dimensions of your floor, how many gallons of paint you need to cover your walls, estimates how much your project will cost, and gives tutorials on how to do it all.  

5. Color Capture (Free, Available on iPhone and Android)

If you’re looking for a specific paint color, this is a great tool. Take a picture or upload an image of a color that inspires you or an object you want to match, and this app will tell you which Benjamin Moore paint is the closet match, along with six similar colors and four complimentary colors.
