Ask Veronica: Veronica Theodoro’s holiday gifts with designer flair

For the holidays this year, I’ve decided to shop mostly local—and I’m having such a good time. Not only does it feel good to support St. Louis-area neighborhoods and small business owners, but every time I visit a shop I end up chatting with a sales person who calls my attention to an artist or a maker whom I may have otherwise overlooked. Unlike scrolling online, shopping in-person makes it especially easy to delight in the journey of discovery, and this is exactly how I want to spend my time off this month.

Over the past two weeks or so, I’ve made it a point to peruse as many local stores as time allows. From books and blazers to dog collars and drinks’ coasters, here are just a few of the items that have stood out to me.

The RX Book Prescription from The Social Goods Marketplace

If you want to give a book this season but aren’t sure how to choose the right one for a friend, co-worker, or family member, RX Book Prescriptions may be the answer. Morgan Noll, owner of The Social Goods Marketplace, curates a collection of books “to soothe what ails your mind, heart, or soul.”  From poetry to memoirs, each book is wrapped with a detailed “prescription,” for the tree-curious or the doom scroller alike. $17 to $30. The Social Goods Marketplace.

The Harris Tweed Ladies Blazer from Civil Alchemy

From the moment I spotted it, I knew I had to have a Harris Tweed Ladies Blazer. Made from 100 percent pure virgin wool, with a flattering slim fit from Scotland-based Kiltane, my only doubt was who to buy it for, myself or my daughter? $489. Civil Alchemy.

The Look by Michelle Obama at Left Bank Books

First Lady Michelle Obama invites us to share her journey through style in The Look, her gorgeous new coffee table book. Whether you’re a fan of Obama’s, have a passion for fashion, or want to learn more about the traditions and history surrounding daily life in the White House, this book is for you. Hearing from Obama’s makeup artist, hairstylists, and longtime fashion stylist Meredith Koop, who grew up in St. Louis, only adds to the book’s interest. $50. Left Bank Books.

Hand-beaded leather dog collars from Forsyth

Don’t forget to leave something special under the tree for your most loyal canine friend. These hand-beaded, leather dog collars should do the trick. I especially appreciate knowing that their craftsmanship is such that it’ll stand up to both roughhousing—I’m the owner of a very active Aussiedoodle—and normal puppy wear and tear. $50. Forsyth.

Bergs Potter Helena collection, available at Garden Heights Nursery

Sure, it’s the middle of winter. There may even be a foot of snow on the ground. But there’s nothing I love more than dreaming up all sorts of ideas for my outdoor spaces. Elegant clay planters, like the “Helena” pot from Bergs Potter, are just a part of the equation. Add a bag of Ocean Forest Potting Mix for those, like me, who need to repot an existing plant pronto. $125 (large planter) $12.99 (potting mix). Garden Heights Nursery.

Glassware from Forai

No matter the season, bar carts have become a staple of living rooms and a platform for displaying one’s creativity and style. But they are especially important during the holidays, when home entertaining is at its peak. Consider gifting your favorite host or hostess a set of textured drinking glasses, available in various colors, from purpose-driven brands across the U.S. and the globe. $32 per glass. Forai
