An interior designer who’s not particularly interested in “stuff” is a rare find—but then, Arlene Lilie is a rare being. As an art lover whose most treasured works expertly depict blank space, a grandmother who makes the jaws of men half her age plummet to the floor and an avid traveler whose favorite refuge is her own bed, Ms. Lilie is a delicate balance of happy incongruities. The founder and owner of Arlene Lilie Interior Design does more than create rooms for her clients—she creates environments. She designs with the intention of bolstering life, not quashing it under heavy drapery and an abundance of sconces. Thus it should come as no surprise that her list of favorites, though somewhat abstract, is entirely understandable.
In the words of Ms. Lilie:
1. My art collection is modern and minimal. I could be happy in an empty room with one big, beautiful painting.
2. I love travel and want to see as much of the world as I can. Interacting with people from foreign cultures is very exciting, and bringing back exotic mementos only adds to the fun.
3. Books. I have quite a collection, but never enough time to read and enjoy them all.
4. Family, especially my grandson, Cameron, who is a German/Persian/Jewish mix. Stirring up the genes is a good thing.
5. My work. I came to it naturally, without a plan. I think I’m somewhat driven—for better or for worse, I’m not sure. A simple item in the right context can inspire a welcome complexity.
6. The mountains of Colorado, where I have a home on Frying Pan River. Being close to nature is spiritual for me.
7. Movies. I hope to be able to go until I die.
8. My bed. It must be white—no colors or flowers—with down pillows and comforter.
9. Music. It’s so stirring, so emotional. I’d hate to live without it. If faced with solitary confinement, I’d sing to myself. It’s necessary for good health.
10. Food. What can I say? Red wine, black coffee, homemade sour cherry pie with vanilla ice cream, country sausage with potatoes and sauerkraut. I get hungry just thinking about it.
11. Rain. I love the rain! A gift of nature for all to enjoy.
