This week, a crew for CBS Sunday Morning stopped by one of St. Louis’ most beloved attractions.
On Monday, reporter Rita Braver filmed an upcoming segment at the Saint Louis Art Museum to discuss its newest exhibit, Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade. Running through May 7, the exhibit explores French impressionist painter Edgar Degas’ fascination with high-fashion hats and the craftsmanship and trade behind them—specifically the women who made, sold, and wore them. About 40 period French hats are on display, as well as works from Degas’ peers, including Édouard Manet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

For the segment, Braver spoke with Simon Kelly, the art museum’s curator for modern and contemporary art. He’s been working on the exhibit for nearly a decade, even before he came to St. Louis in 2010. Braver also interviewed Shannon Meyer, a senior curator at the Missouri History Museum, about the fashion history behind the art.

Sunday Morning‘s interest in the exhibit follows a glowing review in the Wall Street Journal. A spokesman for the museum said the episode could air on Easter Sunday, April 16, as the holiday’s known to inspire women to wear fashionable hats.
This isn’t the first time that St. Louis has received national attention from the show: Last summer, CBS Sunday Morning did a segment on the National Blues Museum.
