Planning the perfect road trip from St. Louis

Gear up like a pro, listen to a local podcast, and plan a pit stop.

1. Pack like a pro. The Packing Pro app can help make packing a breeze, with lists that you can edit and check off. Need new luggage? Consider the Tumi Store at Plaza Frontenac or Riviera Leather & Luggage at West County Center. For specialized camping and outdoor gear, look to REIAlpine Shop, or the new Field Theory in Webster Groves. And be sure to load up on entertainment: Podcasts to check out from St. Louis hosts include We Live Here, Blinders Off, Abby Eats St. Louis, Moonstone Connections, and StitchCast Studio. 2. Take a close look at your car before hitting the road. “The acronym that we like to use is BET, which stands for batteries, engines, and tires,” says Nick Chabarria, public affairs specialist with AAA Missouri. “Those are the three main components of your vehicle that you’ll want to check out before taking a road trip.” It’s also a good idea to double-check fluid levels, including windshield wiper fluid during winter. And consider purchasing roadside assistance, which can save potential headaches on the road.

3. Plan a few stops along the way. While it’s tempting to make a beeline to the destination, try to enjoy the journey (time permitting). Plot out some restaurants and roadside attractions to break up the drive. Heading to Chicago? Stop at the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield or the Mother Jones Museum in Mount Olive. Driving to Memphis? Grab lunch at Lambert’s Café in Sikeston or Celebrations in Cape Girardeau. Spending a weekend in Nashville? Check out the murals and National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky.
