New and noteworthy travel options within driving distance this spring

As temperatures begin to rise and the season brings an abundance of fresh sights and sounds, it’s an ideal time for a road trip to see what’s new in nearby cities.
Nashville

While you’re waiting for the second season of House of the Dragon, check out the next best real-life thing to those reptilian creatures: Komodo dragons. This spring, the Nashville Zoo plans to open the largest such exhibit in the Americas. Boasting indoor and outdoor viewing areas, it can house three adult females, two adult males, and younger Komodo dragons. Looking for another new thrill in Music City? This summer, you can try Nashville Shores’ Riptide Racer, the longest mat slide in the world. The four-lane slide is more than 50 feet high and longer than a football field. For a memorable meal, consider the recently opened Mimo Restaurant and Bar, where Michelin-starred chef Aniello “Nello” Turco serves up Southern Italian cuisine on the first floor of the new Four Seasons Hotel.

Memphis

Condé Nast Traveler recently named Memphis to its list of the “23 Best Places to Go in 2023.” Among the reasons: Tom Lee Park, which recently received dramatic renovations, including a 20,000-square-foot canopy for events such as Memphis in May. Other tweaks include a café overlooking the river, landscape improvements, and new pavilions and pathways. Plus, new spots to drink and dine are on tap.

Kansas City

While we typically drive to KC, it’s tempting to book a flight just to see the new 39-gate single terminal at KCI Airport. It’s opening just in time to welcome visitors for a host of much-anticipated events and attractions, including the NFL draft from April 27–29, the Kansas City Zoo’s forthcoming $75 million aquarium, a slew of big-name concerts (Yo-Yo Ma this month, Taylor Swift in July, Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks in August, to name a few), and the World Cup in 2026.

Chicago

The Windy City has added even more entertainment options. At a former Morton Salt factory, The Salt Shed hosts such acts as Iggy Pop and The Roots. Kids young and old can indulge at the Museum of Ice Cream, which is replete with unlimited ice cream treats, multisensory installations, and activities. The Color Factory in the iconic Willis Tower is another place to delight the senses—and get that perfect Instagram photo. The art museum houses interactive installations and immersive spaces. Where to stay? Consider the St. Regis Chicago, slated to open this month, or citizenM, situated in a new 47-story tower along Michigan Avenue.
