A Missouri miracle is coming to the silver screen, and the film’s trailer will make you cry.
In 2015, John Smith, a then-eighth-grader from St. Charles, almost drowned in Lake Sainte Louise in Lake St. Louis after slipping through the ice and getting trapped underneath for more than 15 minutes. He didn’t have a pulse for more than 45 minutes. As NBC reports, rescue workers performed CPR for 15 minutes, and then John was taken to SSM St. Joseph Hospital West, where a team worked on him for more than 27 minutes. As the story goes, his mother, Joyce Smith, came into the room, began praying, and her son’s heart began to beat again. Smith’s recovery became a national story, with many dubbing it a miracle.

Joyce penned a novel about the unthinkable ordeal, titled The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection. Now 20th Century Fox is adapting the unbelievable story into a film, called Breakthrough, set to release in April of 2019. They’ve tapped Chrissy Metz from This Is Us to play Joyce, Marcel Ruiz to play John, as well as other notable names such as Josh Lucas and Topher Grace. Steph Curry, player for the Golden State Warriors, is a producer on the film.
