How Harris Young Kayser marks a new chapter in trusted legal guidance

After more than 50 years of service, the Missouri-based firm rebrands and expands its legal expertise for businesses, municipalities, and employers.

After more than five decades of trusted counsel, the Missouri-based firm formerly known as Harris Dowell Fisher & Young is charting an exciting new chapter under the new name of Harris Young Kayser

The rebrand not only marks a milestone in the firm’s history but also reflects its expanded range of services and continued commitment to helping employers, businesses, and municipalities navigate complex legal challenges with confidence.

A Legacy of Trust, Built Since 1973

Founded in 1973 by attorney John Harris, the firm began with a focus on management-side labor and employment law. Over the years, Harris and his partners built a strong foundation based on practical, business-oriented legal counsel and long-standing client relationships. The firm has continually represented more than a half dozen large, prominent St. Louis–based employers for 50 years or more, including several manufacturing, transportation, and distribution entities.

Today, that same client-first philosophy remains at the firm’s core. Managing member and 41-year firm veteran Michael Harris, who is continuing his father’s legacy, notes that the new name honors the firm’s heritage while embracing its evolution.

“Harris Young Kayser continues to honor the legacy of our founding partners while embracing new opportunities to serve our diversified clients,” says Harris. “We’re proud of our roots in labor and employment law, and equally enthusiastic about the expanded areas of service our clients now have access to.”

Expanding Expertise to Meet Evolving Client Needs

Over the past decade, the firm has undergone strategic growth to meet the changing needs of employers and public entities across Missouri and Illinois.

Twelve years ago, the firm welcomed Brad Young, who leads the workers’ compensation defense group. A recognized thought leader and frequent voice on KMOX, Young and his team represent municipalities, public entities, and private companies in defending against complex workers’ compensation claims.

Three years later, Portia Kayser joined the partnership, bringing with her extensive experience in litigation defense. Her team handles matters ranging from construction liability and civil rights defense to municipal and commercial litigation.

Now, through a merger with Leahy, Wright & Associates, Harris Young Kayser is expanding again, this time adding estate planning and trust services to its portfolio, in addition to a robust workers’ compensation defense practice. The move improves the firm’s ability to serve as a full-service legal partner, particularly for management-side clients who value practical solutions and a personalized approach.

“The merger broadens what we can offer to clients while keeping our firm approachable and closely connected,” says Kayser. “We’re a small to mid-size team by design. That allows us to give every client direct access to experienced partners and responsive, thoughtful representation.”

A Personalized, Partner-Led Approach

Unlike many larger firms, Harris Young Kayser maintains a partner-centered model that prioritizes quality over volume. Clients work directly with seasoned attorneys who take the time to understand their operations, goals, and challenges.

“Our approach doesn’t shift based on company size,” Kayser says. “We stay personally involved. And when challenges do happen, we’re right there guiding them from start to finish.”

This approach has helped the firm earn a reputation for providing not only skilled representation but also genuine partnership. Helping employers navigate OSHA matters, union negotiations, or employment disputes, the team’s emphasis on collaboration and prevention sets them apart.

As businesses face new complexities in the workplace, from evolving union negotiations to changing employment laws, Harris Young Kayser remains proactive in guiding clients.

“There’s been a shift in the workforce and in how companies must approach negotiations,” Kayser says. “At the same time, regulatory changes, from non-compete agreements to workplace safety, are redefining how employers protect their interests. Our goal is to help clients stay ahead of these changes, not just react to them.”

Continuing the Legacy

With its expanded capabilities and a name that reflects both legacy and leadership, Harris Young Kayser is positioned for continued growth. Yet at its heart, the firm remains grounded in what has defined it for more than 50 years.

“Everyone here truly enjoys what they do,” says Kayser. “That’s not something you can fake. When you have a team that loves coming to work and cares deeply about the people they represent, it shows in the results and in the relationships.”

Harris Young Kayser provides management-side labor and employment law, workers’ compensation defense, litigation defense, and estate planning services to clients across Missouri, Illinois, and the Midwest.
