Why are more Missouri consumers turning to cannabis experts instead of product labels?

NatureMed is building trust through education, personalized guidance, and budtenders who help customers understand a rapidly evolving industry.

Most people don’t expect to talk about their sleep habits, workout routines, or chronic pain when they walk into a dispensary. They expect to ask about cannabis.

At NatureMed, those conversations often start with a product question and end somewhere entirely different. Customers arrive asking about THC percentages and leave with a better understanding of cannabinoids, dosing, and how cannabis may fit into their lives.

Those conversations have become a critical part of the NatureMed experience.

NatureMed began in Tucson, Arizona, serving medical cannabis patients. That foundation continues to build the company’s approach in Missouri, where education remains the major focus.

“Connection is really our main mission and just connecting as many people with the plant in as many ways as we can,” says Angel Mills, digital marketing specialist at NatureMed.

The approach comes at a time when cannabis is becoming increasingly complex. New products, cannabinoids, and research are giving consumers more choices than ever, creating a growing demand for guidance and trusted information.

Many people still expect a dispensary visit to be quick and transactional. NatureMed works to create a more approachable experience.

Customers are welcomed onto the sales floor by budtenders, who help explain products in everyday language. Discussions often focus on outcomes that consumers are seeking, including relaxation, energy, focus, or relief from discomfort.

Missouri’s cannabis industry has also changed how products are discussed.

Traditional categories such as indica and sativa remain familiar, yet consumers are increasingly hearing descriptions such as sleepy, energizing, and focused. Those descriptions can help customers connect product information to personal goals.

“Cannabis has become much more sophisticated than it was even a few years ago,” says Kyra Derington, marketing manager at NatureMed. “We want customers to leave with more than a product; we want them to leave with information they can actually use.”

Why questions matter more today

Consumer interest in cannabis continues to expand, but understanding cannabis has not become any simpler. Research continues to uncover new information about how cannabinoids interact with the body. THC and CBD are widely recognized, though many consumers are now discovering ingredients such as CBG, CBN, and other cannabinoids that can influence a product’s overall experience.

“The plant is really complicated,” says Mills. “The amount of touch points cannabis has within the body are abundant and still being discovered.”

The growing number of products, cannabinoids, and formulations has made guidance more valuable than ever.

A customer may notice two products containing similar THC levels have very different cannabinoid combinations. Budtenders can help explain those differences and answer questions that otherwise would be difficult to solve simply by reading the packaging.

Customers remember the budtenders

Product selection matters, but NatureMed believes its strongest asset is something else entirely: the budtenders, who spend time educating customers and helping them make informed choices.

Budtenders have access to multiple educational platforms covering products, brands, and cannabis science. Team members regularly participate in courses that cover advanced topics and emerging trends.

Their knowledge helps them make recommendations based on customer goals instead of simply directing attention to a product with the highest THC percentage.

“Our budtenders make the biggest difference,” says Derington. “They’re the kindest, most educated budtenders I’ve seen out there, and they make every single experience so enjoyable.”

What customers discover

One of the biggest misconceptions that NatureMed encounters is the belief that every cannabis experience will be intense. Staff members spend time discussing dosage, product selection, and cannabinoid combinations that can produce different results. Education has become an important part of helping consumers make informed decisions and develop realistic expectations.

Ask a budtender what customers wanted five years ago, and the answer was often simple: higher THC. Ask the same question today, however, and the conversation gets much more interesting. Customers want to understand why one product helps them unwind while another helps them stay focused. They want answers, context, and guidance.

NatureMed believes that those questions are helping create a new chapter in Missouri cannabis, one conversation at a time.
