Experience a winter adventure like no other with Giant City State Park’s Gnome Roam

Discover the magic of Gnome Roam, a family-friendly treasure hunt through Giant City State Park’s beautiful trails in Southern Illinois.

With the season upon us, it’s the perfect time to embrace the winter magic at Giant City State Park, where the second annual Gnome Roam has begun. From December through January, visitors can embark on a fun adventure through the park’s scenic trails, searching for hidden gnome sculptures along the way.

These charming gnomes, each with their own personality, add an extra layer of wonder to the gorgeous landscapes of Giant City, making it a must-do winter adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a family looking for a fun, festive outing, the Gnome Roam promises a lively experience filled with outdoor exploration and winter wonder.

How the Gnome Roam Works

Each trail hides a gnome waiting to be discovered, and they are never in the same place twice. Each gnome is holding a different item recommended for a winter hike. Once you spot a gnome, take note of the trail name, record what the gnome is holding, or snap a selfie to commemorate the find.

Make sure to date when you found your gnome and what trail you found it on as locations will be changing. When you’ve completed all seven trails, head to the Giant City Visitor Center with your proof (either the list or photos), and receive a fun gnome patch as a souvenir of your adventure.

The Gnome Roam meanders across seven well-maintained trails, each offering a blend of natural beauty, exploration, and adventure. Perfect for hikers of all ages and skill levels, the trails wind through towering trees, sandstone rock formations (the “Giants” of Giant City), and tranquil creeks.

The trails vary in length and difficulty, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the experience at their own pace. Here are the seven trails to explore during the Gnome Roam:
