Vos Savant was once recognized as the most intelligent person alive. The Parade writer answered every question correctly on an adult IQ test at age 10.
When I was born in 1946, my parents owned a bar and grill at Ninth and Lynch streets. We lived upstairs. No kidding—right over the shop! My father tended bar, and my mother made sandwiches. After that, we moved to an adorable little stone house out by the Anheuser-Busch place. I loved it there—rolling hills, fruit trees, a little vineyard plus a vegetable patch, well water, a chicken coop so we could always have fresh eggs, and a huge Dalmatian to knock me down frequently. Later, we moved back into the city, this time to south St. Louis, less than a block from Carondelet Park. I recall the peace and leafiness of the neighborhood…the safe and quiet feeling of our street…the glow of the street lamps in the dark. When I saw the lights go on, I knew I should go home. In the summer, I would sometimes bicycle past a fellow wheeling a cart of fresh strawberries. He would call, “Strawww-bare-eez! Strawww-bare-eez!” They were always such a treat.
