Looking for a full-body burn, Clayton High School graduate Enrique Cubillo returned to a childhood favorite—the skateboard. He wanted to take a piece of equipment known for daredevil tricks and turn it into an endurance machine. Inspired by cross-country ski poles, he invented the skateboard spike, with a carbide-steel tip, which he uses to push his board up hills and over long distances. His new sport, SpikeBoarding (spikeboarding.com), has two strokes, Stand Up Spike and Cubi-X-Cross, the latter of which involves kicking with both legs and spiking with both arms. He envisions the sport becoming summer training for skiers or a mode of transportation for commuters. “It was made to really just rip you head to toe,” he says. “First and foremost, I made it for myself, so that I could use my entire body right out the door.”
