Last week, the final tenants moved out of Chesterfield Mall. They will not be replaced; the mall is being razed beginning October 15 in order to create the Staenberg Group’s new (and undoubtedly improved) “downtown” style development.
St. Louis photographer Jason Gray got to visit the mall on August 22. “Most of the tenants were already gone or in the process of leaving,” he says, with the exception of the pickleball courts erected to fill up space during the mall’s final months. On his visit, he captured the last gasp of a mall that welcomed shoppers for 48 years. Click through above for the highlights.

The Staenberg Group says it’ll start opening the first residences in three or four years. And best not start planning a shopping trip just yet: The new project will take more than a decade to build out.
