The Chouteau Greenway project has a new name

The Great Rivers Greenway Board of Directors chose the name Brickline Greenway in a reference to the building material that has shaped our city for years.

It’s official: Great Rivers Greenway has announced the new name for the planned Chouteau Greenway project. The 20-mile-long, 17-neighborhood-encompassing path that will connect Forest Park to the Gateway Arch National Park and Fairground Park to Tower Grove Park will now be known as Brickline Greenway.

A winter call for names resulted in nearly 1,000 suggestions, according to a release from Great Rivers Greenway. Its board met to select the name, which needed to be specific to St. Louis and fitting with the diverse vision for the city’s future.

Brickline refers to the building material that has shaped St. Louis structures for years. “It’s a testament to the sturdy, self-made attitude embodied by our city and our people,” said a release from Great Rivers Greenway. “The newly renamed Brickline Greenway gives visitors an idea of what they’ll see as they explore – the combination of beautiful brick and native Missouri trees and plants. It pays homage to our history and invites everyone to collaborate toward building a more connected St. Louis.”

Next steps in the project call for completing the design, engaging neighborhoods, and fundraising.
