If my boyfriend could design his dream pub, it would look like Rhine Haus: 23 flat-screen TVs, cute waitresses, a menu chock-full of hearty Germanic man-food, beer-a-plenty, handsome decor (which he’d pretend to not notice) and, of course, some sort of ridiculous food challenge. What is it about drunk men and eating contests?
The last time I saw my boyfriend display school-girl delight was when he watched two burly neighbors attempt to finish a “Pointersaurus pizza”: a 28-inch, 12-pound pie. Rhine Haus’ “Kitchen Sink Burger Challenge” is equally as insane.
Doing its best to encourage caveman behavior, the pub dares patrons to attempt the seemingly impossible: finish a four-pound sandwich, a pound of fries and two liters of beer which, true to German tradition, is served in a boot (a clear plastic one, not the bartender’s). Finish it in an hour and it’s free. Fail and it will set you back $35.
Rhine Haus is so new it hasn’t had its grand opening yet, which kicks-off this Saturday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. The event promises free Absolut cocktails from 8:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., $1 pints for the early birds, free valet, $1 burgers, and a live band and DJ.
