What’s In The Box Lunches opens in Maryland Heights

From the owners of The Irish Gypsy, the new business is open for breakfast and lunch.

A new pickup and to-go-based breakfast-and-lunch eatery is now open in Maryland Heights.

What’s In The Box Lunches (40 Worthington Access) takes over the longtime home of Scotti’s Deli & Catering, which had been in business for 26 years.

Amy and Denny Corrigan, who also own five-year-old The Irish Gypsy in O’Fallon, Missouri, as well as BnC Travel Cruise Planners, opened the restaurant last month with a clear focus on (as the name suggests) box lunches. The Corrigans, who’ve worked in the industry on and off for most of their lives, had always wanted to own a small restaurant “in an industrial area with a captive audience and minimal restaurant competitors,” Amy says. “Kim Wright, our broker friend who sold us the Gypsy, knew this. She told us that Scotti’s owners were in their 80s and ready to retire, and the business—which perfectly fit our wants and needs—was available, and we jumped on board.”

Here’s what to know before you go.

Where Scotti’s once offered an expansive menu with appetizers, salads, wraps, and sandwiches, What’s In The Box streamlines things with 20 items offered at lunch and a separate breakfast menu.

Breakfast highlights include bagel sandwiches, a smoked pit beef sandwich topped with an over-easy egg, and a Belgian waffle sandwich layered with bananas, raspberries, and hazelnut spread. Biscuits and gravy and a “Bagel Parfait” (cream cheese, granola, fresh berries, and honey) round out the offerings, though Amy admits that her favorite is the fried chicken thighs with sweet-spicy honey butter, their take on chicken and waffles.

“We chose to focus on the box lunch and sandwich component and added breakfast items,” she says, “which we thought the area needed, and we serve them all day.”

Lunch centers on sandwiches, accented by a few salads, wraps, and sides. Sandwich highlights include an Italian (made with sliced or chopped meats), a Cuban (with house-roasted pork), and hot pastrami and Swiss on toasted marble rye. The No. 1 seller is the double smashburger with Gypsy mayo.

Quirkier options include a fried bologna sandwich with spicy aioli and “St. Louis cheese,” as well as a Buffalo Jackfruit sandwich with house-made ghost pepper aioli. Vegetarian choices extend to a veggie breakfast wrap, Greek salad, and a Mediterranean sandwich.

Sandwiches and wraps are served with fries, chips, tater tots, or cole slaw, with pasta salad or a side salad available for an upcharge. Add a fresh baked cookie for $1.89.

Quality is paramount to the Corrigans, with everything made in-house when possible and premium products such as Dietz & Watson deli meats and Volpi capicola. A few favorites from The Irish Gypsy also appear, including fried pretzels with Guinness cheese sauce and the French Dip served on cheese garlic bread.

Orders can be called in for pickup, placed for delivery, or eaten on site, with 22 seats inside and eight on the patio.

Catering plays a big role, too: Amy personally delivers box lunches ($20 minimum, $20 flat delivery fee) within five miles, and DoorDash handles smaller orders.

“I like to think we’re putting our spin on standard items while creating others,” Amy says, “just like we do at the Gypsy.”
