While we didn't expect the triple overhead doors at Vernon's BBQ would be open today, we did think the restaurant would be. To our dismay, a sign in the window indicated one of St. Louis' most interesting (and underrated) barbecue spots has closed.
Matt Stiffelman opened Vernon’s BBQ at 6707 Vernon Avenue in University City just over five years ago. The restaurant was known for venturing beyond the barbecue basics and serving unusual sides (Burnt-End Beans, Tequila Lime Green Beans) and sauces (one being peach-based).
Stiffelman's BBQ Slinger (made with fresh cornbread, burnt-end beans, cole slaw, a choice of smoked meat, and a signature cheese sauce) and Smoked Apple Bread Pudding were featured on a December 23 episode of the Food Network's Eat, Sleep, BBQ. Vernon’s was also lauded in SLM’s 2014 A-List Awards for its “Unconventional 'Cue,” with such off-menu specials as smoked Dutch cocoa-espresso bacon and a smoked-then-grilled bologna.
In late October, the Vernon's BBQ team took top honors at a Kosher BBQ competition held in Dallas, Texas.
Reached by phone this afternoon, Stiffelman explained that the restaurant's lease was ending in a few months. While the business was profitable, he chose not to renew the lease in the middle of winter and under the present circumstances.
"For nine years prior to opening the restaurant, I was a business consultant," Stiffelman said. "If asked by a client, that's the same advice I would have given."
The last day of service was February 6. Stiffelman said that there are no plans to relocate.
