One of the first places where we can remember encountering a prix fixe menu was at Café Provencal. Several years after opening, owner Eddie Neill moved his French café from its original location in Clayton to Kirkwood, where it’s celebrating its 20th anniversary. To honor the milestone, Neill and co-owner John Schreiner created a menu of French classics and house favorites, priced exactly like the bon vieux temps, three courses for $28.
“The prix fixe has been popular ever since we opened the doors,” says Neill. “It’s been good to us, and we wanted to give a little of that back, especially since we’ve had our best year ever.”

In addition to the prix fixe (normally $38), Provencal’s menu contains a la carte items “not doable at that price,” Neill says. Among the a la carte options: rack of lamb, tournedos of beef, bouillabaisse, a bona fide tenderloin filet, and “maybe a sandwich and a burger.”
Neill is also in the process of revamping several menu staples, such as the Trio de Provence, (unchanged over the years), to reflect more authentic representations.
