August is National Sandwich Month, which means Bolyard’s Meat & Provisions is rolling out its Beastwich. Available only through the month of August, the massive sandwich is served on a Companion brioche bun and features a layer of jalapeño aioli, roast beef, smoked tomato relish, pulled pork, porchetta di testa, beer cheese, pork rinds, and charcuterie. “It’s pretty much a showcase of everything that we do, and it’s a monster,” says owner Chris Bolyard.

HOT SPOT

Missouri Botanical Garden is open for happy hour. Originally, the biergarten was a perk for ticketholders of the garden’s latest exhibit, Flora Borealis. Now, those with general garden admission can join in on the fun Wednesday through Friday during the day or during happy hour from 5–7 p.m. After 7 p.m., it’s only open to those with Flora tickets. Located on Linnean Plaza (to the left of the fountain as you enter the garden), the biergarten offers Urban Chestnut beer; wine; and a specialty happy hour cocktail, the Basil Peach Palmer, made with basil, lemonade, Eckert’s peaches, iced tea, and vodka. There’s food, too, including a pretzel with beer cheese, a jumbo hot dog, a sausage plate, salads, and Ted Drewes frozen custard. Expect plenty of tables, lawn games, and children’s activities.

LIQUID ASSETS

Sunday Bloody Sunday

As tomatoes come into their prime, Slow Food St. Louis, Spirits of St. Louis Distillery, Mission Taco Joint, and Square One Brewery & Distillery are celebrating with an event dedicated to the venerable Bloody Mary. Some of the area’s best mixologists will gather at Mad Art Gallery next Sunday, August 12, to put a spin on their own versions of the cocktail. Guests can also enjoy a breakfast buffet from Mission Taco and create their own Bloody Mary at the Bloody Mary Bar. Tickets are $20-$25.
