Artisanal bread in St. Louis has been often superior but rarely exceptional—until now. At Union Loafers, a slice of the organic Light & Mild bread (with a schmear of house-made butter) is all it takes. But feel free to up the ante with a sandwich such as the Roasted Pork (pictured), piled with ham from Burgers’ Smokehouse, shaved pork from local Duroc hogs, Gruyère from Switzerland, house-made pickles, garlic mayo, and a squirt of screaming yellow mustard, all bookended by the yeastiest ciabatta around. Though the bakery’s name was cribbed from an Abbott & Costello bit, Union Loafers is no comedy act: It’s located at Tower Grove and McRee in Botanical Heights (along with Elaia, Olio, and La Pâtisserie Chouquette), one of the most serious culinary corners in St. Louis. 1629 Tower Grove, 314-833-6111, unionloafers.com.
