Second location of Sabroso Cocina Mexicana opening in Maplewood

Mexican cuisine and margaritas: It’s a match made in heaven of a pairing, no less iconic than peanut butter and jelly, cheese and crackers, or Smokey and the Bandit. Yet for the past two-plus years, Sabroso Cocina Mexicana (11146 Old St. Charles) in St. Ann has only been able to offer its guests the culinary side of that equation—until now.

Brandin Maddock, who co-owns Sabroso with her husband, chef Miguel Pintor, confirmed that they plan to open a second location. As first reported by 40 South News, the forthcoming restaurant will be located in Maplewood, in the former home of Casa Maya (2726 Sutton) and Maya Cafe. (The gold leaf signage remains to this day.) Awaiting necessary permitting, the restaurant is slated to open in one to two months.

Unlike at the St. Ann location, which is prohibited from selling alcoholic beverages because of a zoning prohibition based on its proximity to a church, the new Maplewood location will have a full liquor license, as well as some additional food offerings. “Yes, there will be margs!” Maddock says.

Although Maddock and Pintor haven’t yet released many details about Sabroso’s second location, they are eager to tout one particular piece of décor: The restaurant boasts a new mural created by a local artist that’s different from the ones that grace the St. Ann location and will give the space its own identity.

Maddock and Pintor are also excited about new menu offerings, though they haven’t yet released details. Fans of the Sabroso flagship will be happy to know that its signature dish, the cochinita pibil, will be coming to the new Maplewood spot.

Pintor previously served as a key player in Mission Taco Joint, where he spent years as the brand’s culinary director. In 2021, he realized his longtime dream of opening a restaurant of his own with Sabroso, which has earned acclaim for its outstanding Tex-Mex fare and traditional dishes.
