Frankly Sausages announces name and address of first brick-and-mortar restaurant

After 18 months testing the waters with a food truck, Jamie and chef Bill Cawthon hang a shingle at 2744 Cherokee Street

A month ago we learned that Frankly Sausages was opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant…on Cherokee Street…name and address unknown. (The P-D’s Ian Froeb was the first to break the news.)

More details emerged today.

The restaurant is named Frankly on Cherokee and is located at 2744 Cherokee (approximately four blocks west of Jefferson), a 1200 square foot space that last housed Calypso Cafe.

Having a brick-and-mortar will allow owners Jamie and Bill Cawthon to expand the truck’s somewhat limited menu of scratch-made sausages and Belgain-style, brined, hand-cut, twice-cooked french fries that come with homemade ketchup or dipping sauce.

Jamie says additional space translates to more menu items, more side dishes, and the capability to store and process a whole hog, making is less expensive to uphold their commitment to source only humanely-raised local meats.

Frankly on Cherokee will offer counter service and the same mini sheet pan trays to which regular customers have become accustomed. An 18-seat communal table will anchor the 38-seat interior space or there’s the option to grab-and-go, which should be popular given the predominantly hand-held fare and hours that will extend to late-night.

The couple has planned a series of pop-up events leading up to the store’s opening, currently slated for early October.

August 19: Frankly on Cherokee R&D Menu at Cherokee Beach from 5 to 10 p.m.

August 26: Bill Cawthon will compete in a burger battle from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bolyard’s Meat & Provisions in Maplewood. The chef wasn’t tipping his hand, but did hint that the burger might find its way onto the menu at Frankly on Cherokee.

For the next several weeks, the Frankly Sausages food truck (which will continue to operate after the restaurant opens) will feature Frankly on Cherokee’s R&D items from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Catch up with the truck here:

September 5th – Washington University Medical at Scott & Taylor

September 6th – City Garden at 801 Market St.

September 7th – Wells Fargo at 2801 Market St.

September 8th – City Hall at 1200 Market St.

St. Louis Magazine named Frankly Sausages to its A-List in 2016 for “New Food Truck.” It is most deserving of having a more permanent location.
