Here’s a little plea in the spirit of taking care of our own: The Tick Tock Tavern and adjoining Steve’s Hot Dogs were broken into last week and sustained some costly structural damage. (Full disclosure: The Tick Tock is co-owned by freelance writer and Renaissance man Thomas Crone, who frequently contributes to SLM.) Crone and hot dog man Steve Ewing have requested that people help in the reconstruction by…simply showing up. At Tick Tock, obscure movies are screened on Saturdays, and there’s Dungeons & Dragons on Sundays. And Steve’s serves hot dogs from 4 p.m. until the wee hours on weeknights and starting at 11 a.m. on Saturdays.

Clearly Not a Festival of “Lights”

Sample brews from 18 local microbreweries at Prost!, a festival throughout downtown Maplewood next Saturday, October 7, from noon–5 p.m. In addition to the food and drink, clever artisans will be selling beer-enriched hair gel, beer bread, beer-accented walnut pie… You get the idea. (VIP punch cards are available in advance.)

Be There and Be Square

Before you even get started on the whole Provel thing, there’s a competition next Sunday, October 8, to name the best St. Louis-style pizza. So if you’re a hater, stay away from The Hill’s Berra Park (named for Louis, not Yogi), the site of the inaugural STL Pizza Square Off. Eight local parlors and producers will compete, including Dogtown Pizza, Farotto’s, DeRienzo’s, Peno, Smugala’s, Master Pieza, Guido’s, and Gallagher Bros. Tickets are $25 and must be purchased by Wednesday.
