A rundown of the food options at this weekend's Saint Louis Art Fair

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Saint Louis Art Fair. As always, its culinary component, The Art of Food, will lend its weight in gold.

“This isn’t typical festival food,” says executive director Laura Miller, who’s been part of the fair’s leadership for 23 years. “We look for something more than funnel cakes and corn dogs.”

When the fair began, food vendors were concentrated in one area; these days, however, they’re more integral, in part because of the addition of food trucks. “We’ve expanded the footprint significantly,” she says, “and are excited to have new restaurants as well as some who have been with the fair from the start.”

Among the originals is Hank’s Cheesecakes. “The Art Fair was a pioneer in combining outdoor events with the food of local restaurants,” says owner Hank Krussel. “In fact, because it inspired other organizations to follow suit.” He will offer all kinds of treats: carrot cake, four types of cheesecake, cream cheese brownies, cookies, and Angel Wings (chocolate-dipped, pecan-sprinkled turtle cheesecakes on sticks, ideal for strolling the booths).

This year will be a first for Frida’s, the University City vegetarian/vegan café, where the walls happen to be decorated with art purchased at past art fairs.

“We’re pretty excited,” says executive chef/co-owner Natasha Kwan-Roloff, who’s bringing kale salad with sprouted sunflower seeds and black bean street tacos with a citrus cabbage slaw. The Impossible Burger will also appear as a slider alongside Frida’s Signature Burger.

All told, there will be approximately 20 food vendors, including Colleen’s, Dough Co., Drunken Fish, Cafe Manhattan, Clementine’s Creamery, Mandarin House, Pappy’s Smokehouse, Pica-di-Yo, Rearn Thai, Scoops & More, Simba Ugandan Restaurant, and Tivanov Catering. The Essentially Fries food truck will be on site Saturday, StLouisianaQ on Sunday, and Mission Taco Truck both days.
