We’re Not Waffling About the Waffles from Walk Away Waffles

The newest food truck to hit this burg is really gonna make people smile. The Walk Away Waffles truck dispenses warm Belgian waffles in a variety of flavors from an adorable 1958 International Harvester truck.

Pat and Jack Williams (in truck at left) operate three Tropical Moose Shaved Ice sno-cone stands (two in Kirkwood and one in Webster Groves). Their business is seasonal, so they’ve been looking for a cold-weather enterprise to complement the Moose. They had also been offering the waffles out of the sno-cone stands for a bit, and finally, they realized they already had their winner.

Last weekend they parked the truck in front of one of their sno-cone shops, by the Kirkwood Farmers Market, and sold waffles on a Saturday morning. By noon, they’d sold out.

The waffles are of a particular lineage.

These are the Liege style of waffle, more substantial and thicker than the Brussels style, with sugar,” said Jack. “They’re made of a sweet yeast dough that rises like bread dough and has to be punched down. We mix pearl sugar from Belgium into it, and mix fruits and flavoring right into the dough. You can get apple-cinnamon, pumpkin, peach, blueberry, candy cane, and plain. You can also get gingerbread, which is a completely different batter. Then you get a topping of either cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar, and dipping sauce in a cup. The dipping sauces are maple syrup, chocolate syrup, strawberry jam, apple butter, and pumpkin butter. We cut the waffle into four pieces, and you can dip it.”

Jack says he’s still figuring out where he’ll park the truck this winter.

“We’d like to be by BJC, downtown, all the hot spots,” he said.

He’s also still figuring out the names for some of the flavors. At Tropical Moose, shaved ice comes in oddly named flavors like “Motor Oil” and “Wapple.”

“In October we started to serve a banana-and-blueberry waffle called the ‘Blue Monkey,’” he said. “’Monkey Snot’ is one of our big sellers at Tropical Moose. Names are beginning to evolve…”
