“I laid my first brick when I was 15, and the customer showed me how,” says Lee Lindsey, owner of Stone Works. As a youngster, he followed his father from one job site to the next, digging boulders for landscaping jobs and flat rocks for building walls. Today, most of his work is in historic restoration. “It requires a bit of creativity to make new products look like the old ones,” he says. In the kitchen of a new construction project, the goal is to emulate the minor chips and scratches seen in older homes. The carved antique-finished limestone range surround is imported from France and weighs 3½ tons. “There are times when you’re lifting heavy things, your back hurts, and you ask yourself, ‘Why did I choose this?’” says Lindsey, “but I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
