It’s not every day that the opportunity arises to buy one of the few remaining privately owned log cabins in St. Louis County. At least that’s what St. Louis County Parks Historian Danny Gonzales has found:

“Many of the log structures that have survived in St. Louis County have done so because they were purchased or donated to a non-profit or government entity for protection,” he said. “These acquisitions are driven by the fact that log structures are a rare and dwindling resource vital to telling our region’s history.”

The farmhouse on 355 Dietrich Road was said to be purchased more than 150 years ago by the German settler John Dietrich, who bought the land in 1856 (and was the probable builder of the cabin). His family was the first to settle on the road, hence the name Dietrich Road.

According to St. Louis County, the Dietrichs owned and operated a grocery store at the intersection of what is now Manchester and Meramec Station roads. The family also farmed adjacent to their cabin until the economic turmoil of the Great Depression, which resulted in the selling of their farmland.

The cabin was originally built in the dog-trot style, a style which separated two cabins using a breezeway—a roof connecting two structures. The dog-trot has since been enclosed and a frame addition has been added to allow for more living space.

The three-bedroom, two-bath cabin is located on a double lot on more than an acre of land. Past the inviting front porch, original wood and stone details abound. The kitchen has been renovated and features an abundance of cabinet space and a farmhouse-style stainless steel sink. Wood accent walls and the main floor tin roof add to the character of the home. A barn said to have been built at the same time as the house is also included in the listing.
