After more than four decades in the business, Arlene Lilie knows interior design. “I studied sewing and floral designing at 10 years old,” she says. “I was just always very artistic. I was interested in design of any kind.”
Her shop, Arlene Lilie Interior Design (9740 Clayton, 314-367-4000), was a staple in the Central West End for 23 years, before it moved to Ladue earlier this year. “By moving here, I really downsized on the retail end,” she says. “It allows me to concentrate on the interior design business.”

The new space, which is about a sixth the size of the former store, has a wide range of items, from modern to traditional. Behind the front desk, an illuminated sign with ’50s-era script reads, “Everything you want. Right now!”
On one wall, a print showcases butterflies of all shades; part of the Christian Lacroix collection, the wallpaper complements a zebra-print rug and pillows with intricate patterns. Lilie plans to focus on offering such eye-catching accessories, specifically designer accessories.
Then there’s the art. “I have some very nice original artwork,” she says. “I just love original art, especially contemporary art.”
She also designs furniture: upholstery pieces, buffets, dining room tables, custom bedroom furniture…
One of the keys to her long-term success is that her designs have evolved with time. She believes designing is an evolutionary process. “You wouldn’t dress like you did 20 years ago,” she says, “and that is the way I feel about interiors, too.”
She works to keep rooms exciting and fresh. “When you’re a good artist, you keep evolving,” she says. “That’s the secret to good interior design.”
