Courtship: Both undergraduates in Saint Louis University’s physical therapy program, the friendship between Maddie Blakeley and Michael Reed began with study sessions. By the following summer, their connection had deepened, and Michael asked Maddie to dinner and drinks followed by a walk through Forest Park. Unbeknownst to them, the park would play an unforgettable role in their future plans. Maddie, a St. Louis native, and Michael, who hails from outside Chicago, now live in Brentwood and practice physical therapy.
Proposal: “You’ll never guess what I got you for your birthday,” Michael teased all week. His insistence that they spend the afternoon in Forest Park and nervous demeanor tipped Maddie off, but only that something weird was going on. He proposed at the waterfront of the Grand Basin. From the trees, a photographer friend captured the moment.
Ceremony: That morning, rather than a first look, Maddie and Michael exchanged notes, which they recall as the start of countless memorable moments. The couple expected at least one wedding day snag, but they were wrong. Laidback and lighthearted, their ceremony and reception went as smooth as can be. Surrounded by 180 family and friends, they held a traditional Catholic Ceremony at Saint Louis University’s College Church. Small arrangements of hydrangeas adorned the pews. A pianist, trumpeter, violinist, and cantor provided accompaniment throughout the processions. Afterward, they took photos on the Arch grounds.
Reception: Although they anticipated venue selection would be the most difficult, the Hilton at the Ballpark was the first and only spot they explored. The space, not just another ballroom, filled with natural light, provided a city view, and conveniently included lodging for out of town wedding-goers. Soft blues, pinks, and peaches added soft, simple elegance to the modern structure. A live band and DJ packed the dance floor. Without hesitation, the bride and groom put it simply: Their favorite part of the day was the whole thing.
