We were recently heartened to hear about the arrival of a new music store in Maplewood, Planet Score, which will sell all three of the major styles of release from the past half-century: cassettes, CDs, and albums. Here’s a trio of bygone cassette shops.
Got It: Found on the second floor of an oddly shaped multilevel retail pod in Crestwood, this shop had a bit of everything, including a whole lot of quality rock ’n’ roll. It was always fun to hear the ringing of the phone—and then the obligatory answer: “Got It.”
West End Wax: Teamed up with the nearby Left Bank Books, WEW was a critical component of musical retailing in St. Louis in the ’80s and ’90s. It helped make the corner of Euclid and McPherson a must-stop for culture consumers.
Streetside Records: Every Streetside had its own vibe and feel, but the Webster outpost had the warmest of all. On its two levels it offered every medium available and held on to tapes (cassettes and Betamax) long after those forms had lost the race.
