The Open Highway Music Festival was a wonderful way to spend Saturday—enveloped in the cozy arms of Chesterfield Amphitheater, surrounded by trees and the sounds of Americana (for the most part) music. The festival is laid-back and family-friendly, with kids tumbling around on the grass and dancing to the music. It also allows a generous amount of time for each performer, and there’s no overlap, so fans need not rush from one stage to another or decide which band to see. Saturday’s lineup showcased some of St. Louis’ best in alt-rock/alt-country/Americana and brass funk and soul with Funky Butt Brass Band, Hillary Fitz, The Sleepy Rubies, and Matt Jordan. Toward the latter part of the evening, Kentucky-based S.G. Goodman graced the main stage with hauntingly sweet tunes, Columbia favorites The Burney Sisters, and headliner Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. As Isbell said, “We’re gonna have fun tonight… This place is gorgeous.”
