Three local female acts will take the stage at Off Broadway this Friday during the MO Mommas showcase, presented by Gaslight. “The common thread among all three is they’re super powerful vocalists that are really good at arrangement,” says Gaslight owner JB Anderson. All three acts will also perform new music.
Allie Vogler, a member of River Kittens, will debut her work as a solo artist. Despite her nerves of performing alone for the first time, Vogler is ready to grace the familiar stage at Off Broadway, where she's performed with River Kittens.
Vogler also finds comfort in performing at the same showcase as friend and fellow musician Lisa Houdei, who performs under the name LéPonds. “Over the past five or six years, we’ve really been there for each other,” Vogler says of Houdei. “We’ve been musical comrades.”

Houdei will perform new music from her forthcoming album, as well as songs from her first album, Heat, which the Riverfront Times named one of St. Louis’ Top 10 Albums of 2017. “Now, that I have a full band backing me, my sound has changed a bit, especially on my next record,” Houdei says. “It’s definitely electric guitar, maybe more indie, but it’s still electro-folk.”
Rounding out the show, The Burney Sisters—including 12-year-old Olivia and 10-year-old Emma, from Columbia, Missouri—will perform mostly original songs from their forthcoming album.
While all three acts play primarily folk/indie music, they each have their own style. Vogler’s music has a bluesy rock sound with powerful vocals. LéPonds uses synthesizers and breathy vocals to evoke electronic folk. And The Burney Sisters create a folk-pop sound through harmony and plucky ukulele and guitar. “The acoustic [sound] of everything is what brings it all together,” says Olivia.
The “MO Mommas” showcase takes place this Friday, March 30, beginning at 8 p.m. at Off Broadway (3509 Lemp). Admission is $10.
