Jordana Warmflash’s energetic, modern fashion line Novis (novisnyc.com) has taken runways by storm in just two short years. A born-and-bred New Yorker, Warmflash studied at Washington University’s Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, during which time she interned with renowned fashion designers Peter Som and Zac Posen. After four New York Fashion Week appearances, Novis has been consistently named one of Fashionista’s “Labels to Watch.” Earlier this year, the line was honored with a 2014 Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award, putting her in the same category as past winners Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler, and Alexander Wang. In September, Warmflash presented her spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection, a pop art–inspired line of bold primary colors and graphic motifs.

It was amazing. It significantly informed my understanding and love of fashion design from a technical construction perspective. I attribute a lot of that to my professor and mentor, Jeigh Singleton.

What’s your starting point when developing a collection?

I take cues from whatever I’m inspired by at the moment. Usually, I’ll start with a print or sketch I really love, and then I take it from there. I try to stay away from trends and focus more on what I think works for the Novis woman.

Tell me about the inspiration for your latest collection.

The inspiration came from artist Tom Wesselmann’s pop art. I loved how he would take ordinary objects and make something special out of them. Novis is all about bold colors and original prints, so Wesselmann’s art was a perfect complement to the way I wanted to direct the collection.

How do you incorporate art into your designs?

I’ll usually throw in a subtle nod to the artist by incorporating the color palette, a print, or a shape that pays homage to the artist’s work in one way or another. For spring/summer 2015, Wesselmann’s art inspired what we call the Lemon Pop print.

How has your line evolved since your first New York Fashion Week?

Each season, I’ve been able to further articulate and sharpen my design signature. As I personally grow and evolve, the line grows with me.
