New from author Andy Mozina is Tandem, a dark, funny exploration of morality and the lengths that people will go to for those they love.

Tandem, published by Tortoise Books, is the second novel from Mozina, who earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in English language and literature at Washington University and has been previously lauded by Best American Short Stories, Pushcart Prize, and New Stories from the Midwest. In the new book, economics professor Mike Kovacs already has some personal tragedies to maneuver through when another problem pops up: He’s just killed two bicyclists while driving drunk near a Michigan beach. Kovacs might just get away with it, too, but when he gets tangled up in the life of his neighbor Claire, who also happens to be the mother of one of the victims, things get even more complicated.

Tandem is a gripping, quick read that manages to be incredibly funny while navigating some of human nature’s darkest impulses. It’s been called a “‘Tell-Tale Heart’ for our time” by The Hundred Waters author Lauren Acampora and a “psychological tour de force” by The Waters author Bonnie Jo Campbell.

For fans of Netflix’s Dead to Me and those craving a healthy dose of dark humor, Tandem is an essential addition to the bookshelf and one that left us thinking for far longer than it took to read.
