One would think this is pretty simple, but I'm amazed (and honestly, disgusted) with what I see out on the street, at the airport, at the grocery store, just about everywhere! Leggings are a major staple to every woman's wardrobe, yet so many women have no idea what's appropriate when it comes to coverage, thickness, and the basic how-to's. Here are some pointers to avoid a major wardrobe malfunction.
Step One: Take a look in the mirror. If any part of your legging, especially the rear, is slightly sheer, take them off. You can even take a picture of yourself to test if the flash will show your undergarments. So many women are wearing leggings that are too sheer and too small and the whole world can see what's underneath (and no one wants to see that, no matter how rockin' your body may be).
Too sheer!
Much Better!
Step Two: Layer and lengthen. Your rear should be covered at all times when wearing leggings. There are different rules for jeggings (jean leggings) because they usually have back pockets so they do not apply here. If you're wearing black, navy, brown, or any color or pattern of leggings, you have to cover up your bum. No exceptions. If you want to wear a boxy T-shirt or oversized sweater, layer a long tank underneath that covers the back and most of the front. This will not add bulk. If you're that worried about adding bulk to your body, then maybe you shouldn't be wearing leggings in the first place. Or, try a pair of jeggings that look more like jeans but fit like leggings.
Wear long t-shirts, menswear blazers, and chunky sweaters over leggings.
Step Three: Accessorize. Leggings are meant to be worn for comfort but can be used to accessorize an outfit just like tights. Think about wearing leggings under tall boots or ankle booties under tunics, dresses, and shorts. Leggings come in so many varieties these days—you can get really creative when styling your outfit with leggings.
Python printed leggings and yellow ribbed leggings.
Here are my take-aways: Layer long tops, tunics, and dresses over leggings so that you are always covering your bum, make sure your leggings are not sheer or too small, and experiment with fun colors and prints.
