It may surprise visitors that a landlocked state like Missouri plays such a crucial role in marine conservation, but Wonders of Wildlife (WoW) is the only sea turtle rehabilitation center in the Midwest, stepping in to help when coastal facilities are overwhelmed.

In March, 19 rescued sea turtles were released back into the Atlantic Ocean, marking the culmination of a 13-week rehabilitation journey at WoW. But this release isn’t just a feel-good story—it’s proof of what Wonders of Wildlife stands for.

From its immersive exhibits to its hands-on conservation work, every single ticket sold helps fund efforts just like this one. So when planning your family’s summer travel, be sure to include WoW—America’s Best Aquarium—on your list.

Each winter, cold-stunning events occur along the northeastern U.S. coastline, especially around Cape Cod. As ocean temperatures drop, sea turtles—primarily juvenile loggerheads—can become lethargic, float ashore, and face life-threatening conditions. That’s where Wonders of Wildlife comes in.

Since 2020, Wonders of Wildlife has participated in these rescue efforts, with each year bringing a new group of turtles in need, thanks to partnerships with government agencies such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

This past December, several sea turtles arrived at WOW in critical condition. Over the following months, the animal care team provided hydration therapy, nutrition support, physical therapy, and medical imaging to help them recover.

The latest release took place on March 26, 2025, as part of a carefully coordinated effort along the southeastern U.S. coast. After months of rehabilitation, the turtles were deemed healthy and strong enough to reenter the wild—an emotional milestone that underscores the power of conservation.
