When The Annex Coffee and Foods opened in the heart of Webster Groves, it wasn’t just another coffee shop—it was a fresh, multipurpose gathering space that met the needs of a changing world.
Born during the uncertainty of the pandemic, The Annex brought together everything that locals were craving: expertly brewed coffee, in-house made pastries, a specialty foods gift market, deli favorites, and a nostalgic ice cream and candy shop known as Half Pint.
“The Annex is all based on necessities we saw in the community, from a great coffee and pastry shop to a deli and food market to an ice cream shop,” says owner John Barr. “As we fluctuated in our staffing through the pandemic with The Frisco [Barr’s full-service restaurant right next door], we were able to make these things happen at The Annex.”
Now, The Annex is reimagining how the community can enjoy the space after hours with the launch of Annex PM, an evening café experience featuring wine, cocktails, desserts, savory small plates, and a cozy, laid-back vibe.
A fresh concept with familiar comforts
By day, The Annex buzzes with students from nearby high schools and universities, professionals working remotely, and neighbors stopping in for a handcrafted latte, breakfast burrito, or a sweet or savory pastry from the in-house bakery.
The shelves of the adjacent market are filled with local and globally curated finds, many bearing The Annex brand, including jams, salsas, cookies, and infused olive oils.
Guests can also explore The Annex’s curated gift box program, which offers eight themed boxes that are perfect for corporate clients, events, or thank-you gifts, each packed with the kind of quality food items you won’t find anywhere else.
“We do a lot of research to find unique, one-of-a-kind food items,” Barr says. “Every time you walk into The Annex, there’s going to be something you’ve never seen before.”
And no trip to The Annex is complete without visiting Half Pint, a retro-style ice cream and candy shop dishing up everything from house-made popsicles and ice cream sandwiches to decadent brownie sundaes and more than 75 kinds of vintage candy in glass apothecary jars. Mornings at Half Pint even offer acai bowls, parfaits, and overnight oats.
Introducing Annex PM, your new favorite evening spot
With more people heading out later and looking for spaces that feel both elevated and easygoing, The Annex saw an opportunity and an empty café after 4 p.m. The result? Annex PM, now open in the evenings, with a growing menu designed for winding down.
The Annex PM atmosphere shifts with the hour—dimmed lights, ambient beats, and plans for live or DJ music add to the mellow, eclectic evening vibe.
Guests can enjoy a unique blend of coffee, cocktails, wine, dessert martinis, boozy milkshakes, and dessert drinks alongside savory and sweet pastries, charcuterie boards, and seasonal small plates. Think caramelized onion tarts, savory strudels, fresh pies, and shareable snacks made in-house, perfect for pairing with a drink and good conversation.
Still evolving, the PM concept is expected to roll out even more charcuterie and small plate options, as well as a full calendar of music events. Guests can look forward to jazz nights, acoustic sets, and curated playlists that match The Annex’s welcoming atmosphere.
