Kitchens have long been regarded as the heart of the home, serving not just as a space for meal preparation but also as a gathering place for family and friends.
Jenn Lewis, a certified kitchen and bath designer and universal design certified professional with Mosby Building Arts, shares the importance of optimizing the space, best appliances for entertaining and current kitchen trends in this guide.
Where do you start when designing a kitchen?
When designing your dream kitchen, you need to ask yourself what kind of events you want to host, how many people you plan to entertain and what type of entertaining you’ll be doing. Will you be the one cooking? Will your guests be served or serve themselves?
Should you consider space for a wet/dry bar?
Absolutely! “Having wet or dry bars is a big thing right now, which is great because if you’re hungry or need a drink, you’ve got snacks in that area, keeping the kitchen clear for the cook,” Lewis says. She suggests equipping them with practical appliances like a dual-zone wine fridge and an ice maker.
How important is an outdoor grilling area?
An outdoor grilling area is vital for an entertainer’s kitchen, offering a dedicated cooking space that enables the host to socialize while keeping the indoor flow open and inviting.

Are there certain arrangements or layouts that optimize the ability to entertain while utilizing the space?
It’s important for the flow of your kitchen to be logical. You want to avoid constantly bumping into someone while preparing a meal, so careful consideration should be given to the placement of appliances and entertainment areas.
What are the advantages of a butler’s pantry?
If you have the room for it, a butler’s pantry is a great investment. Not only does it give you extra storage for items you don’t use on a regular basis but it can provide an extra prep space when entertaining. It also gives you space for a backstock of food if you’re prepping for bigger events.
What are some creative storage solutions to keep the kitchen organized and clutter-free while entertaining?
Incorporating kitchen “garages” with roll-up doors can conceal larger appliances, keeping countertops clear. Pull-out cabinets enhance accessibility, while benches or window seats offer seating and hidden storage. Features like built-in spice racks and islands maximize functionality, creating an inviting space for entertaining.
What 2024 trends should people be weary of?
“While many kitchen design trends can be visually stunning, they don’t always prioritize functionality or practicality,” Lewis shares. For example, copper hoods look beautiful, but they require a more extensive level of care versus a stainless steel hood. Wood countertops are also popular right now but require extensive care and consideration for use.

How can you incorporate your own personality into the design?
Starting with focal walls is a great idea, and combining different textures can be a stylish way to create a unique atmosphere while maintaining functionality. Another popular trend is the use of colored cabinets, such as forest green or blue, along with bold backsplashes. These elements are excellent ways to add a touch of your own personality to the kitchen.
What are some must-have appliances in an entertainer’s kitchen?
“An induction cooktop is an electric cooktop that uses magnets to sense where the pots and pans are,” Lewis shares. “Another new appliance I’ve seen is a steam oven, which is very versatile; it cooks with steam but can also function as a convection oven, microwave, or warmer. With dual ovens, two dishwashers, and extra burners, these modern appliances enhance kitchen efficiency and flexibility.”
What design features or materials do you recommend for a kitchen that will see frequent gatherings?
A kitchen that will see a lot of entertaining needs a nice sized island for ample counter space and seating, and durable, easy-to-clean materials like quartz or granite countertops. Something else to consider in the design is good lighting. Incorporate a combination of ambient, task and accent lighting to foster a warm and inviting atmosphere.
