Adam Sommer and his family were looking to make their space work better for a large family. Having lived in their historic Brentwood home for 15 years, Sommer and his family wanted to make the home fit the needs of their young family while keeping the feel of the traditional neighborhood.

“We wanted a kitchen design that would stand the test of time. ‘Timeless’ and ‘traditional’ were our key words,” Sommer says of their home renovation. “We needed that timeless, classic look and feel to coordinate well with the functional needs of a big family. We also desired a better traffic flow within the home, which necessitated combining several rooms, moving walls, and adding new entry points. On top of all of that, we wanted a kitchen with a wow factor.”

Callier & Thompson helped the Sommer family with a full gut-and-rebuild renovation, complete with several features custom-built just for the kitchen and other high-end materials and finishes.

“Everyone from our designer, Christine, to the construction team were kind, warm, and welcoming every single day,” Sommer says. “The initial design presented to us was flawless—it was evident that our designer listened to our vision and delivered. The construction team started on time, the project remained on-schedule and finished on time, as originally promised. The result was a gorgeous kitchen that transformed our entire home.”

First-Time Remodelers

When one family came to St. Louis from Europe, they went from moving between small houses and rentals to settling into a larger, “quintessentially American” home with charm and character.

“We wanted our house to feel like a place where everyone, including children and guests, are welcome everywhere,” the homeowner says. “We eat together as a family, even when entertaining, so we wanted one large space for an expandable dining table, rather than a small kitchen table and a formal dining room with limited dimensions. It is a great place to host friends and family from all the places we have lived, as well as entertain new friends from St. Louis.”

The team at Callier & Thompson helped the family remove a second staircase to open up the space between the kitchen and dining room, which also added a reading nook for the children upstairs. The design team worked with the family’s requests to blend the off-white look of the cabinets with a more dramatic black-and-walnut color scheme in the dining room by adding textures and patterns to blend the two spaces.

“The installation crew was respectful, meticulous, and tidy. They were especially careful knowing that we had a toddler,” the homeowner says. “They followed up many times as the project was finishing to make sure that we were happy with all of the details. They even provided us with a temporary range when ours was delayed.”

With Callier & Thompson’s attentiveness to their clients and their all-in-one offerings, the homeowner says it made the remodel “much more enjoyable than we thought it would be.

“Working with Callier & Thompson was great. We had never done any renovating before, so using one firm that could design, source, and execute our project took a lot of the headaches off our plate,” the homeowner adds. “Everyone we dealt with was professional, timely, and communicative and made it very easy from a project management perspective. We were able to focus on making the best design and layout decisions without getting distracted by coordinating vendors and contractors. Christine O’Sullivan in particular was fantastic. She did a great job of listening to us (even when we didn’t agree!), and then presenting us with enough options to make sure we got what we wanted while staying focused on our goals. She was always constructive and helpful, and fun to work with.”

Roots in Remodeling

Callier & Thompson’s roots travel deep into the foundations of the St. Louis kitchen and bath remodeling business. In 1955, WWII veteran Joe Callier launched the company, called Kitchen Masters at the time, and originally only made and sold cabinets. When sons Gary and Dave joined the business, they started adding installation services.

The business then expanded into full-scale kitchen and bath remodeling in 1968 and became Callier’s Custom Kitchens. Over the years, the business continued to expand, rebranding to Callier & Thompson Kitchens and Baths in 1995 and then to Callier & Thompson Kitchens, Baths and Appliances with the advent of an appliance division in 2003.

Several years later, the Callier brothers were looking to sell the business when three employees—Carolyn Beard, Bob Strate, and Mike Schwartze—got together and purchased the company in 2014.

Today, Carolyn Beard, Bob Strate, and their team work with clients to bring the company’s 125 years of industry experience together with the most current industry trends and make clients’ home projects pop—all while providing the company’s personal touch.

“We like to go out on the final walk-throughs and get the feedback personally,” says Beard, an owner and designer. “We take a lot of pride in our reviews, and I would say the most common response is ‘everyone was super-friendly and professional.’ If there are things that come up during construction that need to be addressed, we try our best to respond quickly and offer suggestions to make sure the customer is happy with the final decision.”

Callier & Thompson Kitchens, Baths and Appliances comes with a full production crew and designers, who regularly attend seminars and training sessions. This emphasis on further training and sharpening skills reflects Callier & Thompson’s commitment to a quality experience for the customer.

Callier & Thompson specializes in more than just kitchen and bathroom remodels. The company can also help with laundry rooms, walk-in pantries, basements, home offices, and room additions, as well as specific projects including fireplace surrounds, wine cellars, built-in bookcases, and feature ceilings and walls.
