What do magicians and engineers have in common? According to this St. Louis resident, a lot.
Meet Ulises Galeano, director of information security engineering at Mastercard and part of the corporate security team based in Mastercard’s St. Louis tech hub. Ulises’ career journey as an engineer was initially sparked by his love of games and magic. He began teaching himself magic tricks at age 7 and has become a self-taught magician, thanks to his creativity, dedication, and keen ability to figure things out—a skill that serves him well in his role.
Today, Ulises leads a global team of engineers, “magicians” in his words, who manage the security of applications at Mastercard. The team works together to ensure that software is developed and operated as securely as possible to protect valued customers, partners, employees, and data. Just as magicians can see tricks through the eyes of their audience, Mastercard engineers see technology through the eyes of hackers, identifying the weak spots of systems to ensure they are secure.
Beyond magic, Ulises is passionate about his Hispanic heritage. “Being Latino has given me a unique perspective on the world, a strong work ethic, and a strong sense of community,” Ulises says. “These qualities have helped me to become a successful leader in cybersecurity. I am also proud to have a very diverse team in terms of race, gender, religions, and nationalities.”
Mastercard’s commitment to driving diversity is part of what attracted Ulises to the company, and it’s what makes his team dynamic. “I believe that diversity is essential for success in cybersecurity, as it allows us to bring a variety of perspectives and experiences to the table,” he says. “I hope that my story will inspire other Latinos and other people from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in cybersecurity and other STEM fields.”
One trait his team shares: a commitment to protecting Mastercard’s customers from fraudsters, embodied by the team’s motto “Mission first, people always.”
