Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, located just a three-hour drive from St. Louis, offers a unique travel experience that city dwellers can’t find within urban confines.
The area is mostly known as a charming college town, home to the University of Illinois’ main campus, but Champaign-Urbana is also an appealing escape with its agritourism and local charm. Its attractions shine particularly bright during summer and fall.
Starting in August and September, the town buzzes with activity as the new academic year begins. Many amenities, often free or low-cost due to the college-town setting, become available, including live music, festivals, and Illinois sports events.

All About Agritourism
One of the standout features of Champaign-Urbana is its agritourism. For some in metro areas such as St. Louis, the opportunity to engage with agricultural experiences is a rare treat.
“Travelers from St. Louis will pass through miles of agricultural land on their way to Champaign, but once they get here, they’ll reap the benefits of that agriculture,” says Terri Reifsteck, vice president of marketing and community engagement at Experience Champaign-Urbana.
The local flavors are abundant, from farmers’ markets to simple pleasures like pumpkin and apple picking. Visitors can immerse themselves in the farm-to-table lifestyle, with Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery being a prime example. This gem offers more than just fresh produce; it’s a destination in itself. Guests can enjoy on-site dinners, indulge in goat yoga, and savor award-winning cheese made from the farm’s own goat milk.

“Everything we make is chef-driven, and everything we put on our plates, when possible, is grown within 50 miles of where we are located,” says Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery owner Lauren Brokish. “This is something we’re really passionate about: celebrating the bounty of the Midwest.”

In Champaign-Urbana, farm-to-table dining takes on a whole new meaning. Other highlights include The Wheelhouse and Riggs Beer Company. And with Champaign-Urbana being named Midwest Living’s “Greatest Midwest Food Town,” you know you’re in for a great dining experience at any of these local gems.
“We like to eat local because—No. 1—it just tastes better,” Brokish says with a laugh. “But there are many layers to it. Not only are there nutritive benefits, but it’s also about supporting the community that we love. Every dollar at a local restaurant turns into $3–$4 of local economy stimulation. Local food is a super impactful way to support the local economy, because there are so many people in the community who worked to make that happen.”
Loads of Green Space

As a resident herself, one of Brokish and her family’s favorite things about the area is its extensive park district.
Champaign-Urbana is home to a large amount of green space, with six nearby forest preserves, which offer hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing.
Middle Fork River Preserve is home to the state’s only International Dark Sky Park, and popular Allerton Park and Retreat Center offers 14 miles of hiking trails, with art interspersed throughout.
Vibrant College Community
While agritourism is a major highlight, Champaign-Urbana has much more to offer. The town’s blend of urban and rural charm and its collegiate energy create a dynamic, inviting atmosphere.
After enjoying a farm-to-table dinner, visitors can explore the town’s vibrant nightlife, whether seeing a show at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts or State Farm Center, or catching a local band at the Rose Bowl Tavern or Pour Bros.
The area’s affordability is another significant draw. Visitors can enjoy live music and dining at a fraction of the cost compared to big cities. This cost-effectiveness extends to accommodations and other activities, making it an attractive destination for budget-conscious travelers.
