St. Louis native Becky Sauerbrunn honored during USWNT match

Matchdays look a little different for Becky Sauerbrunn these days.

The US Women’s National Team legend retired from professional soccer following the end of the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League season, but the St. Louis native hasn’t gone far, signing a multi-year deal with TNT Sports.

Gone are the days of pre-wrap and shutting down the best attackers in the world. Instead, she’s bringing her insights to the broadcast booth.

“You’re not quite sure what your post-playing is going to look like,” she says. “To have an offer to stick around the game, I feel very fortunate.”

Sauerbrunn now brings the same preparation and zeal that helped her become one of the world’s best defenders during 219 appearances with the national team. The TNT appearances aren’t her only fore into sports media. The former FC Kansas City stalwart also appears on The Women’s Game podcast with Sam Mewis and Lynn Biyendolo, among a growing list of past and present NWSL stars. The appearances double as a chance to hang out with friends and an outlet to discuss relevant topics about an increasingly global sport.

“I feel a real responsibility telling these stories because it’s all very near and dear to my heart,” Sauerbrunn says. “I take it very seriously, but I’m having a lot of fun.”

On Tuesday, before the US Women’s National Team faced Jamaica in a friendly at Energizer Park, Sauerbrunn was honored in a pre-match ceremony, where she was joined by family and friends. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry paid tribute to Sauerbrunn, and US Soccer supplied Sauerbrunn-inspired bobbleheads for fans.

“I’m not used to having the spotlight on me like this,” said Sauerbrunn, “but it really is about celebrating the people who got me here.”

As the USWNT squad crashed the broadcast booth, after winning the match 4–0, Biyendolo said, “For us to be able to send her out like that, in a place that is so special for her, it’s special for us.”
