On June 16, St. Louis Magazine brought The 314 Podcast to life with its first-ever live recording, held in The Sheldon’s Ballroom.
The evening began with a welcome from St. Louis Magazine President and CEO Matt Coen before guests were treated to a bit of friendly competition. In a surprise appearance, Mayor Cara Spencer joined SLM Editor Ryan Krull on stage for a live trivia showdown, with audience members playing along from their phones.
The main event featured a one-on-one conversation between podcast host and SLM executive editor Sarah Fenske and special guest Bill McClellan, the longtime St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist known for his beloved storytelling and frequent appearances on Donnybrook. In a rare personal interview, McClellan reflected on his life, career, and the city he has chronicled for decades.
Throughout the conversation, McClellan shared the stories behind some of his most memorable columns, including the time he found himself stranded outside after retrieving his mail during a snowstorm. He also spoke about what he loves about the city, including regular visits to Missouri Baking Company on The Hill. In one of the evening’s most heartfelt moments, he opened up about being diagnosed with a terminal illness and, against all odds, making a full recovery.
The conversation was equal parts hilarious and moving, offering the audience a rare glimpse into the experiences that have shaped one of St. Louis’ most recognizable voices. Making the evening even more special, McClellan’s family was in attendance, and his grandson escorted him to the stage.
