St. Louis’s Interior Motives lands a role on TV

Interior designer David Deatherage hopes to catch a glimpse of a pair of upholstered chairs on an episode of Love Story.

Like a lot of us, interior designer David Deatherage can’t wait for the next episodes of Love Story: John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Carolyn Bessette to drop. His reasons, though, have less to do with plot line and more to do with furniture.

Yes, furniture.

Last September, Deatherage answered an inquiry from the show’s set designer Teri Bella. A pair of Italian slipper chairs had caught her eye on the website for Interior Motives, the furniture company Deatherage runs with managing partner J. Perez. Bella wanted to know if the two chairs, upholstered in a blush pink fabric and influenced by the work of midcentury designer and architect Mario Bellini, could be shipped to New York the very next day. Spoiler alert: The chairs made it to Manhattan but Deatherage doesn’t know in what context they’ll be shown on the series.

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has asked about the company’s unique furniture collection. Over the years, Deatherage has fielded calls from reps for movie director Pedro Almodóvar and producers for Sex and the City 2. Both were interested in wall sculptures by midcentury artist C. Jeré. In the first instance, “we couldn’t get it to them in time for filming in Spain,” says Deatherage. As for Sex and the City 2, the designer watched the movie but never caught a glimpse of the piece.

This time he’s hoping the chairs make the cut.
