Rick Wood spent five years earning an architecture degree only to change his career path altogether. “I’m the kind of guy who would rather be doing something with his hands—with jeans on and rock ’n’ roll on the stereo—than sitting at a desk,” he says.
Now, Wood spends his days building houses, hospitals, and stadiums—on a miniature scale. Along with Paul Kafalenos and Evan Wykes, Wood is a model maker at Silver Wing Studio (701 N. 15th, Ste. 401E, 314-421-0085), one of the region’s few independent model shops. The trio has worked with nearly every major architectural firm in the area and modeled St. Louis landmarks such as the Thomas F. Eagleton United States Courthouse and the Edward Jones Dome.

But these three are modest about their work. As Kafalenos says, “We come in, cut stuff up, paint it, and head home.”
