In case you haven’t been down a grocery store liquor aisle lately, let me tell you, things have changed. It used to be pretty standard options: vodka, rum, or gin. Now there are flavored versions of almost any alcohol you can imagine.
Last year, my friends, Julie and Greg offered me my first glimpse into this world. While at their home, they suggested that I try their favorite new cocktail, blueberry vodka and lemonade, and in an instant, I was hooked.

This spring, I was about to throw away some strawberries that looked questionable (not yet moldy, but not gorgeous either) when a thought occurred to me: Couldn’t I make my own flavored vodka? Why yes, I could!
To make flavored vodka, choose a vodka that is moderate in price—avoid the really cheap stuff, but no need to use Grey Goose either. Use any mix-in you like—fruit is great, but try it with herbs such as rosemary or basil, or chili peppers if you want something different. Don’t be afraid to combine flavors to create exactly the right mix for you. When using fruit, squeeze it a bit before adding it the jar to release the juices.
Fill a mason jar with your mix-in, then fill it completely with vodka and put on the lid. Let it sit in a dark space for about three to seven days. If using strawberries, be sure to remove them after three days—they turn gray and turn your vodka red. If your creation seems too strong, add more straight vodka. If it’s too weak, let it sit a while longer.
Here is my recipe for my “house drink.” Feel free to make it yours.
1 1/2 parts lemonade
1 part strawberry vodka
1 part club soda
Fresh strawberries
Combine first three ingredients together, adjusting taste to your preference. Serve over ice and top with a strawberry.
